The national minimum wage is expected to be set in 2026.
This was said by Minister of Labour and Social Security Phila Buthelezi today (Wednesday, August 14, 2024) in the House of Assembly. Buthelezi was responding to a question posed by Khubuta MP Masiphula Mamba.
Mamba wanted to know if the country had a national minimum wage. Buthelezi responded by saying the country currently had nothing like that. He then stated that it was planned that by 2026, the national minimum wage would be set.
Buthelezi further mentioned that the minimum wage in the textile industry was around E1 700. He was responding to a question posed by Mafutseni MP Sabelo Mtsetfwa, who wanted to specifically know the minimum wage of the textile industry.
The minister further told his fellow MPs that they made inspections to the textile companies. He said what they found was that the companies paid the exact minimum wage to their workers. He was responding to Maseyisini MP Nokuthula Dlamini, who wanted to know if the textile companies were compile.
He promised that any matter reported to them would continue to be taken up. He said at times, they would conduct inspections at companies, but they would have challenges because they could not cover all of the companies at once.
