MBABANE – The usually quiet town of Nhlangano turned into a hive of activity on Wednesday as final preparations for His Majesty King Mswati III’s 57th birthday celebration gathered pace.
Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini visited the King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium to inspect the ongoing preparations ahead of the national event scheduled for Friday.
He was joined by senior government officials and members of the organising committee.
The Prime Minister was said to be impressed by the level of commitment displayed by performers and organisers.
He commended the cultural groups, schoolchildren, security forces, and various entertainment teams for braving the cold weather to perfect their routines. According to officials close to the planning team, Dlamini described the scene at the stadium as “encouraging” and “a true reflection of national pride”.
Those involved in the preparations told government leaders that everything was on track and that Nhlangano was ready to host the King and the thousands of citizens expected to attend.
By midday, the stadium and its surroundings were already buzzing with activity. Cultural troupes rehearsed their traditional dances while uniformed forces drilled in formation on the grounds. Entertainment groups ran through their line-ups and vendors began setting up stalls, preparing to cash in on the influx of people expected on the day.
Local businesspeople interviewed by officials reportedly expressed excitement about the opportunities the celebration would bring. Some said they had stocked up on food, drinks, and crafts, hoping to make good sales during the event.
Dlamini is said to have encouraged emaSwati from all corners of the country to attend in numbers, saying national celebrations of this nature were not only meant to honour the monarch but also to promote unity and patriotism.
He also conveyed birthday wishes to the King on behalf of the government, reportedly stating that the nation remained grateful for His Majesty’s leadership and continued guidance.
Organisers indicated that all logistical aspects of the event, including security, transport, health, and accommodation, were being finalised to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day.
Rehearsals are expected to continue until Friday, as Nhlangano prepares to host what residents believe will be a historic celebration.
