LOBAMBA – Runners from over 10 countries converged at Somhlolo National Stadium for the eighth edition of the Imbube Marathon, which attracted close to 8 300 participants and further strengthened Eswatini’s position as a destination for international sporting events.

Representing His Majesty King Mswati III, Prince Mgucisi welcomed athletes who travelled from different parts of the world to participate in the annual race, which has continued to grow in popularity and international recognition.

Among the countries represented were Cameroon, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Lesotho, the United States of America, South Africa, the Philippines and Taiwan, among others.

“We are honoured by the presence of runners from Cameroon, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Lesotho, and the United States of America, South Africa, Philippines, and Taiwan, amongst others,” Prince Mgucisi said.

He described the gathering of thousands of athletes as an inspiring demonstration of unity, determination and excellence.
The event recorded significant growth in participation, increasing from 2 762 runners in 2016 to approximately 6 000 in 2025 before climbing to close to 8,300 this year.

Prince Mgucisi said the latest figures represented an increase of approximately 2 200 participants compared to the previous edition.

He noted that the marathon had developed beyond a sporting competition to become an important national event bringing together communities, families, businesses and international visitors.

The Prince also highlighted the marathon’s growing international standing, pointing out that it had secured Comrades Marathon qualifier status in 2023 and had subsequently been certified as a Two Oceans Marathon qualifier.

These achievements have strengthened its appeal to long-distance runners seeking opportunities to compete in recognised road races.

Prince Mgucisi encouraged international participants to explore the country’s tourism attractions before returning home.

“This marathon gives an opportunity to our visitors to explore our beautiful kingdom before you depart,” he said.

He urged the visitors to experience Eswatini’s hospitality, culture and natural beauty by visiting its various tourist sites.

The event featured four race categories, namely the 42.2km marathon, 21.1km half-marathon, 10km race and 3.3km family fun run.

South African runner Siphamandla Nkosi emerged victorious in the men’s 42km race, while Kenya’s Rosina Kiboino claimed the women’s title. Both international champions received E40 000 each, according to the race-day results provided.

Emaswati also featured prominently, with Gcinile Magongo emerging as the first liSwati woman in the 42km race and securing third place in the women’s category.
