EZULWINI – A standing ovation met Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini as he officially welcomed more than 80 student engineers from the US, UK and Canada, marking eight years of a game-changing partnership between the Kingdom of Eswatini and Engineers in Action (EIA).

Speaking during the lively welcome ceremony at Sharma House on Thursday, the Prime Minister saluted the transformative impact of the collaboration between EIA and Microprojects, which has resulted in the construction of 30 footbridges and two clean water systems across 25 Tinkhundla centres.

“We are not just talking about infrastructure,” said the Prime Minister. “We are celebrating safe access to schools, to clinics, to markets. These are not conveniences, they are basic rights and a cornerstone of development.”

The PM, clearly moved by the figures, highlighted that the newly built water systems are already providing clean drinking water to over 700 pupils, while the footbridges have connected more than 90 000 emaSwati to vital services.

He also announced that the current wave of support was far from over.

“By the end of this year, 36 completed footbridges and three water systems will stand. And in 2026, a new E35 million investment will bring eight more bridges and two additional water systems,” he revealed.

He praised Microprojects’ leadership, applauding Director Mr. Mbingo for running a results-driven and professional institution.

“As the saying goes, every organisation rises and falls on leadership. What we see here is leadership at work,” the PM said.

To the student volunteers, many of whom are spending their summer break in rural Eswatini, the Prime Minister extended heartfelt thanks.

“You are welcome to the Kingdom of Eswatini, the Palace of Africa. Thank you for your service.”

The audience, which included Cabinet Ministers, MPs, traditional leaders, and community members, was treated to entertainment from local groups and EIA students who brought the house down with a celebratory dance.
