APIA, SAMOA: Samoa has no army or regular armed forces.
It relies on support from its defence ties with New Zealand, under the bilateral Treaty of Friendship of 1962. The Prime Minister of Samoa, Fiame Naomi Mataafa, highlighted this fact when addressing Commonwealth leaders during the opening ceremony of the CHOGM yesterday. She said, despite having no military, the country contributes to United Nations peacekeeping missions. “We know that where there is no peace, there will be no prosperity,” she said.
