MBABANE – Football international player Lindo Mkhonta has a gold medal with his Zambia team, Zesco United.
This comes after they were crowned champions of the ABSA Cup, beating Red Arrows 4-2 after penalties following a 1-all draw in regulation time. Mkhonta was part of the starting eleven in the final match played on Saturday at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
Zesco Unite pocketed K1,000, 000 cheque (About E500 000) while Red Arrows walked away with K400,000 (About E200 000).
Mkhonta who captained the National team, Sihlangu signed with the Zambian side in 2023 and he penned a three year contract. He joins the Zambia side from Umbutfo Eswatini Defense Force (UEDF) side Young Buffaloes.
He is among the five other international players who are playing their trade outside the country. The others are Justice Figareido who plays for South Africa Betway Premiership side Richards Bay, Banele ‘Pupu’Sikhondze who plays for Tabora United in Tanzania, Banele ‘Stiga’ Ndzabandzaba who plays for Botswana Defense Force XI (BDF XI) and Mxolisi Mkhonta who plays for Botswana Jwaneng Galaxy.
Zesco United is a club wholly owned and sponsored by the state-owned electricity company, ZESCO Limited in Zambia. The club is not only professional but boasts a rich history.
The Zambia side that is set for the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Confederation Cup is yet to decide on the future Mkhonta after his excellent performance having featured in majority of their games.
They are second on the Zambia Super League with only three matches remaining while leading is Power Dynamos.
