MBABANE – Nhlangano is set to host a vibrant celebration of spoken word poetry on June 14, 2025, as the Poetry in the Park event, organized by Thenjiwe Mamba, expands its reach from Mbabane to this new location.
This edition, themed “NHO Speak,” aims to highlight the rising artistic talents of southern Eswatini while promoting unity within the national arts community.
Poetry in the Park was established to elevate the culture of spoken word throughout Eswatini, providing a platform for artists to transition their work from page to stage. Event organizer Thubelihle Maseko emphasizes that moving to Nhlangano marks a significant milestone, enabling the series to extend its influence into rural and remote areas of the country, supported by sponsors like ;R. Visuals, Weirdo Clothing, and Jonokuhle Upholstery.
This edition places a strong emphasis on artists from the southern region, with many performers hailing from Nhlangano. The title “NHO Speak” pays homage to their contributions, with the goal of showcasing their talents while garnering support for future opportunities, funding, and resources.
Leading the event is esteemed poet Simphiwe OPK Simelane, who heads The Other Poets, a foundation dedicated to nurturing local talent. He will be joined by a dynamic lineup of emerging voices, including Teejay, Sams, Gobizitha, and Sibahle, all described as the new generation of poetic talent poised to captivate audiences.
OPK will mentor these emerging performers, accompanied by poets from Mbabane and Manzini to foster a spirit of collaboration rather than competition. The event will be hosted by Mduduzi MDZ Dlamini, a poet himself, ensuring the integrity of the line-up.
Attendees can look forward to an emotionally rich and entertaining showcase that delivers impactful messages with artistic finesse. Maseko highlights poetry as both a teaching tool and a form of entertainment stating, “Words are spears thrown at the fullness of the heart.” The event promises to be a celebration of artistry, collaboration, and community, marking a pivotal step in the national poetry movement.
