MANZINI — In response to the alarming surge in crime rates within the Manzini Region, a comprehensive stakeholder Indaba was convened today at the Mavuso Exhibition and Trade Centre.

The event brought together a diverse assembly of leaders and experts aiming to devise effective strategies for crime prevention and intervention.

Leading the discussions was the National Commissioner of Police, Manoma Vusie Masango, who emphasized the urgency of addressing the multifaceted nature of crime in the region. The Indaba saw active participation from the Municipal Council of Manzini, representatives from the Regional Administrator’s Office, community leaders from Tinkhundla Centres, local business owners, youth groups, clergy members, and non-governmental organizations. This broad representation underscored a collective resolve to restore safety and security in Manzini.

Traffic Safety Under the Spotlight

One of the critical sessions at the Indaba focused on traffic safety, a concern that has been exacerbated by the increasing number of road accidents in the region. Senior Traffic Operations Officer, Emmanuel Lusito Dlamini of the Royal Eswatini Police Service, led discussions on the socio-economic impact of road traffic incidents.

Dlamini highlighted how unsafe roads not only threaten lives but also deter investment and hinder economic development in Eswatini. He called for robust counter-strategies, which could be formulated through continued dialogues and public awareness campaigns. Emphasizing the role of responsible road usage, Dlamini advocated for increased public education initiatives to promote safer driving practices and a heightened sense of community responsibility among road users.

In response, participants acknowledged the need for a multi-pronged approach that includes both infrastructural improvements and behavioral change among drivers. The discussions also touched on the positive impacts of improved road networks, such as better access to education and healthcare, which significantly enhance the quality of life for residents.

Community-Led Initiatives for Crime Prevention

Community leaders and non-governmental organizations presented a series of recommendations aimed at bolstering crime prevention. These included community policing initiatives, youth engagement programs to deter involvement in criminal activities, and enhanced surveillance in crime-prone areas.

The Municipal Council of Manzini, in its presentation, committed to collaborating with law enforcement agencies to implement these recommendations effectively. There was a unanimous call for increased resource allocation to the police force and community-based security initiatives to curb the rising crime wave.

A Path Forward

The National Commissioner expressed optimism that the resolutions adopted at the Indaba would serve as a foundation for a safer Manzini. A follow-up session has been proposed to assess progress and recalibrate strategies as necessary.

As the stakeholders dispersed, there was a prevailing sense of determination to not only address the symptoms of crime but also tackle its root causes, ensuring a secure and prosperous future for the Manzini Region.
