Meet Temvelo Mayisela, a driven beauty entrepreneur from Logoba, whose passion for makeup and nails blossomed long before she ever thought of it as a career.
A proud graduate of Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU), Mayisela is not only academically accomplished but also deeply committed to helping her clients discover the best version of themselves.
For her, beauty has always been more than skin-deep. As a young girl, she was fascinated by makeup, even if it meant getting scolded by teachers for wearing lipstick and powder to school. “I never studied makeup formally,” Temvelo shares. “It started as a calling. I would do my own face, and people would ask how I did it—that’s how it all began.”
While makeup came naturally to her, Temvelo took a more formal approach when it came to nails. Understanding the technical side of the craft, she enrolled in a certified program to become a professional nail technician. This balance of passion and professionalism has helped her carve out a successful career as both a makeup artist and a nail expert. “Art grows with you,” she says. “I can see how much I’ve grown since I started.”
Like any small business owner, she has faced her share of hurdles. Transportation can be a challenge, especially when she needs to make house calls for larger makeup bookings. “I can’t turn them down—they’re good for business,” she explains. Another challenge is the high cost of quality makeup products, which she must balance with keeping her prices affordable for her local clientele.
When it comes to nails, her biggest struggle has been building a steady clientele. However, she has tackled this head-on through social media marketing, which has proven to be a game-changer. “Promoting myself online has really helped,” she says.
She is inspired by ever-evolving beauty trends, particularly those that allow for creativity. For her, eye-shadow is where a makeup artist truly expresses style. “Everyone can contour and highlight, but eye-shadow is where you show your true creativity,” she says. She’s also obsessed with a glowing under-eye highlight, admitting, “I’m slightly addicted to it!”
On the nail front, Temvelo believes in the timeless importance of clean cuticles and currently loves burgundy nails. “They’re classy, simple, and on another level,” she says with a smile.
What truly sets her apart, however, is her deep connection with clients. For her, every session is an opportunity to not only boost self-esteem but also create a moment of joy. “There’s nothing better than seeing a client look in the mirror and smile,” she shares. “That’s what drives me.” During sessions, the conversations go beyond beauty tips, often offering motivational insights. “We learn from each other,” she adds.
