MBABANE – The University of Eswatini (UNESWA) has commended government for ensuring student allowances are paid on time, alleviating stress for students and the institution.

UNESWA Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Justice Thwala, expressed this sentiment on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, during the unveiling of new staff members under the Dean of Student Affairs (DSA). The newly appointed team includes Bongani Msibi as DSA, Mtfunywa Dlamini as Assistant DSA, Phephile Mlangeni, and Mduduzi Ndlangamandla as wardens.

Professor Thwala highlighted the detrimental effects of delayed allowances on students’ well-being, stating that such delays contribute to stress, leading to class boycotts and disruptions in the academic calendar.

“Late payment of allowances not only affects the students but the entire institution. When classes are boycotted, valuable learning time is lost, forcing the university to rush through the curriculum,” Thwala remarked.

He further noted that financial stress can have grave consequences, including instances of student suicides. While such incidents are tragic, Professor Thwala reassured that the university is working closely with the Faculty of Health Sciences to address underlying causes and provide support systems.

The unveiling of the new staff under the DSA marks a significant step toward addressing student concerns and improving their overall university experience. Professor Thwala hoped that the team, led by Bongani Msibi, would prioritise student welfare.

Speaking at the event, Msibi acknowledged the need for fresh, student-focused approaches to resolve challenges.

“We must unlearn old methods and adopt new, practical solutions to address contemporary problems faced by students,” Msibi emphasised.

Professor Thwala and Msibi stressed the importance of including students in problem-solving processes, ensuring their voices are heard as solutions are crafted.

“Engaging students is critical to understanding their issues and finding effective, sustainable solutions,” Professor Thwala concluded.

The newly appointed staff are expected to play a pivotal role in transforming the student experience at UNESWA, ensuring that challenges are tackled proactively while fostering a supportive academic environment.
