MBABANE – Kwasukasukela Lolonga Project opens doors for aspiring directors under 35.
The Kwasukasukela Lolonga Project has officially opened its doors to aspiring film directors in Eswatini, presenting a groundbreaking opportunity to shape the future of local cinema.
Funded by the Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM), this 10-month programme is designed to elevate filmmaking by providing world-class training, mentorship, and hands-on experience to the country’s next generation of directors.
Currently in its development stage, the project has brought together a group of talented screenwriters who are busy crafting a limited drama series. They are working under the expert guidance of respected local writer Welile Masuku and acclaimed South African screenwriter Ayanda Halimana, known for her work as Creative Producer & Writer of Makoti (SABC and Amazon Prime), as well as multiple Netflix films.
Soon, selected young directors will step in to bring the series to life. Their journeys will begin this October with an International Masterclass and continue into an intensive apprenticeship where they will direct the series under the mentorship of global industry professionals.
Local director and facilitator Samkeliso Nxumalo emphasized the importance of the programme for Eswatini’s creative industry:
“Platforms like these are vital to the growth of our creative sector. They open doors for new voices and give them the tools to tell powerful, world-class stories.”
Nxumalo also highlighted how the initiative tackles the challenge of youth unemployment:
“This programme is not just about making films, it’s about building futures. By empowering young people with the skills to create content that attracts revenue and travels beyond our borders, we are opening pathways to sustainable livelihoods in the creative economy. We are grateful to ESCCOM who continue to support the sector.”
Encouraging young filmmakers, Nxumalo added:
“Every expert we admire today was once a beginner who took a chance on themselves. This is that chance for the next generation.”
