MBABANE – The sustainability of cities can only be realised once the youth is fully engaged in the development of the urban areas.

This transpired today (Monday, October 7, 2024) during the launch of the World Habitat Day and Urban October, which took place at Happy Valley Hotel in Ezulwini. The youth is taken as the future of any nation. Because of that, it was felt during the event that the youth should be engaged now so that the future existence of the country’s urban areas can be assured.

The launch was held under the theme: ‘Engaging Youth to Create a Better Urban Future,’ which highlights the critical role of young people in driving sustainable urban development. Minister of Housing and Urban Development Appolo Maphalala was represented by Minister of Health Mduduzi Matsebula.

According to information from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the event also emphasised the importance of inclusive urban planning and the active participation of the youth in shaping the future of cities. Minister Matsebula addressed the challenges of urbanisation, particularly the rapid growth of cities, and called for greater youth involvement in local governance and urban initiatives.

“Today’s gathering is not only a reflection of our dedication to sustainable urban development but also a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility we share in shaping the future of our cities and communities,” Matsebula said.

The minister said across Eswatini, there were tangible improvements in housing, urban services, and infrastructure. Local Governments were working diligently to provide better public spaces, promote green initiatives, and foster youth-led projects that prioritise sustainability.

According to Matsebula, the forum was intended to be a platform for dialogue and collaboration, bringing together local authorities, youth representatives, urban planners, and various stakeholders in the housing and urban development sectors. “We must continue to invest in innovative housing solutions, sustainable urban practices, and the protection of green spaces,” he said.

Eswatini Local Authorities Managers Association (ELAMA) President and Municipal Council of Manzini CEO Lungile Dlamini shared Matsebula’s sentiments. She said it made sense to include the youth in developing urban areas, as that could help in alleviating unemployment. “With youth unemployment at 48 percent, high numbers of young people live below the poverty line. Engaging youth in local Government is key to building more innovative, inclusive, and sustainable cities,” Dlamini said.
