PIGG’S PEAK— Newly appointed and serving Tinkhundla Youth Committee members have been challenged to remain accountable and closely connected to the young people they represent as they take on the responsibility of addressing youth concerns in their constituencies.
The call was made during a training programme organised by the Eswatini National Youth Council (ENYC) for Tinkhundla Youth Committees in the Hhohho Region, with representatives from all 15 constituencies gathered at Gobolondlo Hall in Piggs Peak.
Speaking during the training, Indvuna yenkhundla Mayiwane Magolide Ndwandwe thanked the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs for facilitating the programme, describing the training as an important step in preparing youth representatives for the demands of leadership.
Ndwandwe said committee members should understand that their positions come with a responsibility to know and communicate the challenges facing young people in their respective constituencies.
He described the committees as the ears and eyes of the youth, emphasising that their effectiveness depends on how well they remain in touch with the young people they represent.
“Leading people is not easy,” Ndwandwe noted, acknowledging that youth leaders may encounter challenges while carrying out their responsibilities. He urged the committee members to remain committed to their duties and seek guidance from the ENYC whenever they face difficulties.
The Indvuna further stressed the importance of maintaining accurate communication within the youth leadership structures. He said committee members should report whenever they relocate from their areas of residence to another place for any reason that may affect their ability to serve in their constituencies.
The emphasis on reporting movements highlights the need for continuity and accountability within the committees, ensuring that young people are not left without representation when a committee member relocates.
Tinkhundla Youth Committee members serve a three-year term, with the opportunity for one re-election, allowing an individual to serve a maximum of six years.
The training comes at a time when youth representatives are expected to play an increasingly important role in identifying issues affecting young people and linking them with the relevant youth development structures.
For the committee members gathered in Hhohho, the programme is therefore more than an orientation. It is an opportunity to strengthen their leadership abilities, understand their responsibilities and develop mechanisms for ensuring that the voices of young people reach the institutions mandated to address their concerns.
Ndwandwe’s message placed particular emphasis on responsibility, consultation and accountability, reminding the youth leaders that effective representation begins with listening to the people they have been entrusted to serve.
