MBABANE — Young changemakers from across Eswatini have completed the Climate-Smart Initiative Training for Climate Action and Sustainable Development, aimed at equipping them with skills and tools to promote sustainability in their communities.

The training, delivered by Indalo Inclusive in partnership with the Eswatini National Commission for UNESCO, the Eswatini National Trust Commission, and UNESCO ROSA, was declared a success. It brought together youth from all four regions of the country.

The initiative comes at a critical time, as Eswatini faces significant climate-related challenges that impact communities and the environment. The country has experienced severe droughts and water shortages, unsustainable land use leading to soil erosion and loss of arable land, and biodiversity loss caused by habitat destruction and climate change.

Under the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme and the Greening Education Partnership (GEP), the training provided practical knowledge and mentorship to help participants take bold steps toward building resilient and sustainable futures where both people and nature thrive.

Young people in Eswatini are increasingly recognized as vital agents of change in addressing these challenges. They are actively raising awareness about environmental issues, developing innovative solutions such as sustainable agriculture and renewable energy projects, and engaging communities to promote collective action toward sustainability.

According to Eswatini National Commission for UNESCO, the programme will not end with the training. Mentorship sessions will continue to guide participants in turning their ideas into action. Plans are also underway to profile the youth changemakers to amplify their voices and inspire others to take action.

The training forms part of Eswatini’s broader efforts to empower young people as key players in climate action and sustainable development.
