BUHLENI– As preparations intensify for the 2027 Population and Housing Census, members of the public are being encouraged to remain vigilant and verify the identity of anyone requesting personal information.
The reminder comes amid concerns over the rise of “Facata” scammers who have been targeting unsuspecting citizens across Eswatini. Authorities have stressed that while the census is a legitimate and important national exercise, people should always confirm that individuals collecting information are officially authorised.
The Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, through its Central Statistical Office (CSO), has already begun groundwork for the 2027 census. Teams have been dispatched nationwide to conduct a comprehensive mapping exercise, which started in January 2026 and is expected to conclude in October. The mapping process is designed to ensure that every household and establishment is properly identified ahead of the main data collection phase in 2027.
During the first leg of the 2026 Buganu Ceremony at Buhleni Royal Residence, CSO officials took the opportunity to engage directly with emaSwati. While joining the nation in celebrating this important cultural event, the statistics team also educated the public on how the census will be conducted and what to expect when field officers visit their homes.
Officials explained that the census is far more than a routine headcount. It is a vital national undertaking that informs Government planning and policy decisions for years to come. Reliable census data assists in the development of better schools, improved healthcare services, enhanced infrastructure, job creation initiatives and broader sustainable development.
By gathering accurate information on population size, distribution and living conditions, Government is better positioned to allocate resources efficiently and respond effectively to the needs of communities.
To safeguard the integrity of the process and protect citizens from fraud, the CSO emphasised that all authorised field officers will be clearly identifiable. They will wear official CSO-branded attire and carry identity cards displaying their photographs, full names and other important details. Members of the public are strongly encouraged to check these credentials before providing any information.
The engagement at Buhleni was well received, with many attendees expressing appreciation for the clarity provided and the opportunity to ask questions directly. The outreach effort reflects Government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and inclusive participation in national programmes.
As the countdown to 2027 continues, the CSO is urging all emaSwati to cooperate fully with authorised census officials and to provide accurate information when visited. Every individual counts, and every response plays a role in shaping the country’s development trajectory.
With careful planning, heightened public awareness and collective responsibility, the 2027 Population and Housing Census is expected to serve as a cornerstone in building a data-driven and prosperous future for Eswatini.
