MBABANE – Emaswati who neglect their responsibilities toward children or elderly parents may soon face intensified scrutiny, thanks to a generous donation from the Republic of China (Taiwan).

On January 15, 2025, Taiwan donated two vehicles valued at E1 180 000 to the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office (DPMO) in Mbabane. The donation includes a Toyota Hilux GD6 twin cab and a Toyota Quantum Kombi. These vehicles will be instrumental in a new initiative, Asibambaneni Sibe Ngumndeni, aimed at identifying and addressing cases of neglect in families.

Taiwan’s Ambassador to Eswatini, Jeremy Liang, highlighted the enduring friendship between the two nations, which dates back to 1968. “This donation is a testament to the bond we share and the mutual assistance between our countries in areas such as health and social welfare. We hope to continue fostering this relationship,” Liang stated.

Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla, visibly elated, expressed profound gratitude to Ambassador Liang and his team. She emphasized that this initiative was long overdue, citing alarming cases her team encountered when assisting vulnerable members of society.

“We have seen elderly women raising grandchildren on their own while the parents disappear. This program will help us hold irresponsible individuals accountable and provide relief to struggling families,” Dladla said.

Dladla also acknowledged the long-standing benefits of Eswatini’s diplomatic relationship with Taiwan. She pointed out that the partnership, initiated by King Sobhuza II, has been consistently upheld by His Majesty King Mswati III, despite challenges. “This ongoing relationship is a testament to His Majesty’s commitment to preserving the legacy of King Sobhuza II,” she remarked.

With these new resources, the DPMO is poised to make meaningful progress in addressing family neglect and fostering stronger family bonds under the Asibambaneni Sibe Ngumndeni program.
