EZULWINI – A grand celebration of culture and tradition is on the horizon!

The much-anticipated inaugural edition of the annual Fobela Wamaskandi is set to spotlight all things cultural, from traditional attire and cuisine to the soul-stirring sounds of Maskandi music.

This debut event will take place on March 29, 2025, at the Sibane Sami Hotel, under the theme Imvunulo, which refers to traditional bhinca attire. The concept’s mastermind and one of the event’s organizers, Illa Penboy (real name Sifiso Ndlangamandla), shared insights into this unique celebration.

Speaking to this publication, Illa revealed that the inspiration behind Fobela Wamaskandi stemmed from observing the younger generation’s increasing love for cultural heritage. “As trends on social media show, young people are wholeheartedly embracing our culture and the love for Maskandi music. It’s beautiful to see them take pride in our rich traditions,” Illa remarked.

He added, “Our traditional attire is the best in the world, and you can see its popularity on platforms like TikTok, where young people proudly showcase their heritage. This is why we chose Maskandi as the ideal genre to honor and celebrate our culture.”

When asked about the event’s lineup, Illa confirmed the participation of Sifiso Masikane and the talented South African Maskandi artist Limit Nala, a 25-year-old musician from KwaZulu-Natal, who will perform with a 12-member band. He also mentioned that more artists would be announced weekly leading up to the event.

In addition to live performances, the event will feature traditional activities such as Lutsango and Sibhaca. Attendees can also explore cultural stalls, including the Liguma, Litsango, and Umcobotsi stalls, while enjoying displays of handicrafts.

Illa further highlighted the positive reception for this inaugural event, noting that every ticket purchase includes a food coupon for traditional dishes served at the event.

Tickets are priced at E200 for general admission and E450 for VIP access.
