HLATHIKHULU – In the vibrant heart of Hlathikhulu, Kontjingila, a remarkable story of resilience and creativity unfolds. Nkoskhona Simelane, affectionately known as “Msholozi,” is not just a name, it represents a vision fueled by passion and perseverance. This young photographer has made significant strides in the industry, proving that dreams can be realized with determination and hard work.

Msholozi’s journey began unexpectedly in 2021 at Sphiwe Record Bar in Nhlangano, where he initially took on the simple task of capturing passport photos. “I had never even used a camera before,” he recalls. His breakthrough came through a brother named Dube. “One day, he asked me to cover for him while he went for a job interview. He taught me the basics of photography right there on the street, without even a camera,” Msholozi shared.

After Dube secured the job, Msholozi stepped into the role permanently, marking the start of his photographic adventure. Just two months in, he caught the attention of Malungelo from Eyethu Production, who invited him into his studio. “That’s when my love for photography truly ignited,” he reflects. However, Msholozi soon felt the call to carve his own path.

In February 2023, he launched Msholozi Communications using borrowed equipment. Unfortunately, just three months later, the gear was reclaimed. “With no tools and no income, I had to pivot,” he explains. He became a church photographer and keyboard player at Grace Center Church, where Prophet Agape told him, “You will receive big gigs and travel the world with your gift.”

His prophetic words manifested quickly. Msholozi began capturing significant events like Police Day and Mr and Miss UNISWA. However, the road was not without its challenges, he lost all his equipment during a riot at the Freshers 2023 event. “It was devastating, but I refused to give up,” he insists.

Undeterred, he saved diligently and partnered with Madrumz Visuals, expanding his portfolio and gaining valuable experience. Tragedy struck once more when he lost a drone belonging to Madrumz, leading to a hefty refund that nearly broke him. But 2024 brought a turning point,  he officially registered Msholozi Communications. “Madrumz supported me in buying a new drone, and since then, I’ve been blessed with even more opportunities,” he said.

Msholozi has carved a niche in gospel photography, filling a gap he identified in the market. “Most of my clients come from churches and gospel events,” he explains. His name began to grow, and one of his most memorable gigs was photographing Ayanda Ntanzi in Pietermaritzburg in 2023. “It was my first time traveling for a gig, just like the prophet said. After that, more shows in South Africa followed,” he said.

Now balancing his photography business and studies at IDM College, Msholozi is a true embodiment of hard work. “I self-sponsor my education, shooting in the studio from 2 PM to 10 PM and taking one wedding per month on weekends. I edit photos late at night and study early in the morning, often getting less than three hours of sleep. It’s not easy, but I’m driven,” he shares. Additionally, he serves as Class Representative, and he should lead by example.

To aspiring photographers, Msholozi’s message is clear,  “Don’t give up. Fight for what you love. Be original, don’t copy others. Let your work speak for who you are. They must hire you for what you bring.”

As he continues to rise in the photography world, Nkoskhona “Msholozi” Simelane is a testament to the power of determination and creativity. With each click of the shutter, he captures not just images, but the essence of his journey, inspiring others to follow their dreams.
