MATSAPHA – Music, passion, and power vocals lit up Esibayeni Lodge as His Majesty’s Correctional Services Choir claimed the top spot at the 2025 Standard Bank Choral Music Championship — and they did it in style.
Held on a vibrant Sunday, the competition saw choirs from across Eswatini bring their A-game, but it was HMCS Choir that walked away with platinum honours, earning 188 points and a grand prize of E25 000. Their performance was nothing short of electrifying.
The choir was dressed to dazzle and ready to conquer. Under the baton of Melisizwe Zwane, the choir blended vocal excellence with show-stopping style, donning lime green glittering uniforms that lit up the stage as much as their music. They performed the classical Western piece “Magnificent (D486)” by Franz Schubert and an original African composition titled “Ingoma,” penned by Zwane himself — a musical tribute to Standard Bank’s 32 years.
Their final choice piece, “Umphandza,” sponsored by Imisebe Publications, was the show-stopper that sealed their win. The crowd was up on their feet, cheering and singing along, swept up in the moment.
It was a-star-studded audience that added to the event’s sparkle were Commissioner General LaMakhosini Phindile Dlamini and Deputy Commissioner General Phindile Sibandze, who were front and centre to support the choir’s thrilling performance.
Soloists also shone bright, not to be outdone, individual members of the choir also racked up impressive solo scores:
Nothile Mathonsi – 1st, Alto Solo (80%)
Sibusiso Dlamini – 1st, Tenor Solo (75%)
Andile Mavuso – 2nd, Bass Solo (75%)
The HMCS Choir has once again proven that music behind walls knows no bounds. Their powerful harmonies and heartfelt delivery turned the competition into a celebration — not just of music, but of unity, excellence, and pride.
