MALKERNS – Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has pledged to enhance Eswatini’s arts industry, recognizing its potential to boost the national economy.
Speaking at the official opening of the 18th edition of the MTN Bushfire Festival at Malandela’s Lifestyle in Malkerns, Dlamini emphasized the importance of supporting the creative sector. He mentioned that he was even considering championing legislation to help strengthen the industry, inspired by similar successes in other countries.
The Prime Minister praised the organizers of the MTN Bushfire Festival and expressed his appreciation for the festival-goers, acknowledging that their participation was crucial to the event’s success. He noted that he would work closely with his Cabinet team, including Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla, who was also in attendance.
Dlamini was responding to an earlier address by United Nations (UN) Eswatini Resident Coordinator George Wachira. Wachira had underscored the vital role of the arts industry in national development, stating that the UN had partnered with the MTN Bushfire Festival because festivals are not merely moments of celebration—they are also spaces for transformation.
Wachira highlighted Nigeria as an example, noting that the country’s creative economy contributed approximately US$5.6 billion (about E100 billion) to its GDP in 2022. He added that the Nigerian government has launched strategic plans to generate at least US$100 billion (about E1.8 trillion) annually and create over two million jobs through its creative industries.
MTN Bushfire Festival Director Jiggs Thorne expressed his gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the festival’s success over the years. He also thanked Prime Minister Dlamini and Deputy Prime Minister Dladla for their support, as well as MTN Eswatini for its longstanding financial sponsorship. MTN Eswatini Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Wandile Mtshali also expressed his delight in supporting the festival, highlighting the transformative power of the arts in Eswatini.
