MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE- Athletics Eswatini delivered a spectacular performance at the Maputo Invitational Meet held at Zimpeto Stadium on Saturday, June 21. The team of 34 athletes returned home with an impressive haul of 26 medals, outshining regional rivals Mozambique and Angola in a competition that coincided with Mozambique’s 50th independence anniversary.
Zakhele Dlamini, President of Athletics Eswatini, expressed immense pride in the athletes’ achievements In today Morning Sport show. “What a performance from Athletics Eswatini! Our athletes showed remarkable dedication and skill, bringing home the most medals at the event. This is a bold statement on the regional athletics stage,” he said.
The Maputo Invitational Meet served as a crucial preparatory platform for upcoming major events, including the AUSC Region 5 U20 Games in Namibia and the CAA-SR Senior Regional Championships in Zimbabwe. Eswatini’s athletes rose to the occasion, securing numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals that signal strong prospects for future competitions.
Dlamini extended heartfelt thanks to the athletes, coaches, and support staff who proudly flew the Eswatini flag with brilliance and commitment. He also acknowledged the vital role of parents who supported their children’s participation in the event. “We are grateful to the parents who allowed their children to compete and represent Eswatini on this important stage,” he noted.
In addition, Dlamini made a call to the private sector to increase investment in athletics, emphasizing that continued financial support is essential as Eswatini’s athletes prepare to compete internationally. “We urge more private companies to step forward and help our athletes as they continue to showcase their talents beyond our borders,” he added.
A special mention was made to the loyal fans and supporters who personally funded their travel to Mozambique to cheer on the team. “Your presence made all the difference, and your unwavering commitment does not go unnoticed,” said Dlamini.
Finally, Athletics Eswatini expressed gratitude to the Eswatini Sports & Recreation Council and the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) for their steadfast support in making the trip possible.
