EZULWINI – Fourteen organisations in Eswatini have had their data protection certificates officially renewed by the Eswatini Data Protection Authority (EDPA).
The renewal recognises organisations that registered early with the authority and have completed their first year of compliance with the Data Protection Act of 2022.
These include the Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM), Instacash, Liberty Life Swaziland, Youth Enterprise Fund, Eswatini Royal Insurance Corporation, SNAT Savings and Credit Cooperative Society, Sincephetelo Clinic, Foschini Swaziland, Swazimed, Eswatini Bank, Oracle Group, Standard Bank Eswatini, SMVAF, Phoenix of Swaziland Assurance Company, and Eswatini Water Services Corporation.
Speaking after the announcement, ESCCOM’s Communications Officer Fisiwe Vilane said the renewal was a clear indication of ongoing commitment from leading institutions to improve the handling and protection of personal information.
“Data protection is about accountability. These renewals show that more entities are taking responsibility and putting systems in place to manage personal data properly,” she said.
According to the EDPA, over 420 entities have registered for data protection, including private businesses and government ministries. The authority has also conducted training for Data Protection Officers, organised national roadshows, and hosted the Eswatini Data Protection Awareness Week 2025 to increase public knowledge.
Instacash’s Vusi Langa said compliance with the law was not a burden but something that helped build trust with clients. “When customers know their data is safe, it improves how they interact with your business,” he said.
The EDPA reminded the public that processing personal data without a valid certificate is an offence under the law and urged consumers to always ask whether organisations are registered before sharing personal information.
For more details on registered entities and valid certificates, the public can contact the EDPA or visit the official ESCCOM website.
