KWALUSENI – Determination filled Kwaluseni Inkhundla as scores of aspiring soldiers gathered for the latest army recruitment fitness test, featuring a 3.2-kilometre endurance race that tested both strength and spirit.
In the men’s category, Lwazi Cedric Mndzebele (32) emerged victorious after a dramatic comeback in the final stretch. Mndzebele, who trailed in second place during the first half of the race, overtook his competitor after the 1.6-kilometre turning point to secure the win. A Health and Safety graduate from IDM and captain of the Ludzeludze Killers football team, Mndzebele attributed his success to consistent training and faith.
“Before the race, I trained with my football team, pushing myself and others who believed in me,” he said. After crossing the finish line, he led a short prayer, thanking heaven for his victory.
Coming in second was Mancoba Nhlabatsi (26) from Logoba, who maintained a strong performance despite losing pace on a steep section of the track. “During the first half I was number one, but the slope slowed me down,” he said. “If I get the chance to join the army, it will help me a lot because as a runner, I sometimes struggle to afford necessities.”
In the women’s category, Nompulelo Dlamini (25) sprinted to first place after making a bold decision to quit her textile job to focus on preparing for the recruitment. Her determination paid off, earning her the top position among female participants.
“I quit my job after hearing about the recruitment and started training immediately,” she said. “If I prosper, my parents also prosper. I’ve always been seen as the child of unemployed parents, but if I succeed, it will bring progress to my whole family.”
As the recruitment drive concluded, the atmosphere at Kwaluseni was filled with hope and motivation, with participants celebrating their achievements and looking forward to the next stage of Eswatini’s army selection process.
