SIPHOFANENI – Police in Siphofaneni have launched an investigation into a stock theft case that turned deadly early on January 15, 2026.
At about 0400 hours, four people travelling in a Toyota Hilux loaded with pig carcasses failed to stop when ordered by police at Phonjwane.
A chase ensued, forcing the suspects to abandon the vehicle. During the pursuit, two suspects, aged 37 and 35, both from Siphofaneni, were fatally wounded, while the remaining two managed to escape.
Reports indicate that the suspects are linked to the recent theft of four pigs from a homestead in Mpaka. Authorities further revealed that the two deceased suspects were out on bail for similar offences previously committed in the Siphofaneni area. Police confirmed that the search for the other two suspects is ongoing, as they remain at large.
The incident underscores the serious dangers associated with stock theft in the country. Beyond the economic impact, such crimes often escalate into violent confrontations between suspects and law enforcement officers, sometimes resulting in loss of life. The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) stressed that engaging in or supporting stock theft is reckless and can have fatal consequences.
Stock theft continues to be a major concern in Eswatini’s rural communities, threatening livelihoods and food security. Police urge residents to report suspicious activities and cooperate with authorities to prevent such crimes. Community members are also encouraged to safeguard their livestock and remain vigilant, as criminal networks involved in stock theft often operate across multiple regions.
While investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by criminal activity in rural areas. The Royal Eswatini Police Service reiterated its commitment to apprehending all those involved and bringing them to justice, in an effort to deter future stock theft and protect lives.
