MBABANE – The Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) has stepped up its nationwide safety awareness campaign, calling on members of the public to prioritise safety and remain vigilant as persistent heavy rains continue to affect several parts of the country.
In an advisory issued on January 16, 2026, the power utility urged customers to stay indoors during severe weather conditions and to immediately report any electrical hazards. EEC strongly cautioned that all fallen power lines, damaged poles and exposed electrical equipment must be treated as live and extremely dangerous, particularly in wet and flooded environments.
The company explained that the ongoing rainfall has heightened the risk of damage to electricity infrastructure, with some substations experiencing flooding while the foundations of wooden electricity poles have become unstable. These conditions present serious safety risks, not only to the public but also to EEC’s technical teams deployed in the field.
Despite these challenges, EEC reassured the nation that it remains committed to maintaining the stability of the power supply and ensuring public safety. The utility is currently operating on a limited basis, focusing primarily on critical and emergency situations to ensure that response efforts are carried out safely and effectively.
EEC emphasised that public cooperation is playing a vital role during this period. Timely reports from customers about power outages and hazardous situations enable the company to identify high-risk areas and plan restoration work efficiently once weather conditions improve.
“Your safety is paramount,” the utility stated, encouraging residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during storms and to keep a safe distance from any damaged or fallen electrical infrastructure.
The company also highlighted logistical challenges affecting restoration efforts, particularly in remote areas. Access to sites away from main roads has been severely restricted by muddy terrain, slippery and deteriorated road conditions, and eroded access routes. In some cases, these routes may require stabilisation before full repair work can safely commence.
Additionally, EEC warned that weakened pole foundations could lead to further power interruptions even after the rains subside. As such, comprehensive inspections will be conducted to ensure long-term safety and reliability of the electricity network.
Despite the difficult circumstances, EEC expressed appreciation for the patience, understanding and cooperation shown by customers nationwide. The utility assured the public that its teams stand ready to mobilise fully as soon as it is safe to do so, with the aim of restoring normal services as quickly and safely as possible.
EEC also reaffirmed its commitment to transparent communication and customer support throughout the severe weather period. Residents are encouraged to use the available reporting channels to alert the company of outages or hazards:

• Call: 800 9000 or 2508 3333
• Email: callcentre@eec.co.sz

As the rainy season continues, EEC urged the public to remain alert, follow safety guidance and work together with the utility to minimise risks and ensure the well-being of all.
