MBABANE – As Eswatini prepares for the State Opening of Parliament on Friday, 20 February 2026, national attention is naturally turning to the moment when His Majesty King Mswati III will once again outline the country’s priorities and expectations for the year ahead.

The Speech from the Throne has long served as the nation’s most authoritative policy compass, setting the tone for government programmes, legislation and development priorities.

To understand the significance of the upcoming opening, it is important to revisit the directives issued by His Majesty during last year’s State Opening of Parliament. Those directives framed 2025 as a defining period of delivery and transformation and laid out a clear programme of action for government across the economy, social services, infrastructure and governance.

A defining national theme: The Year of Transformation

When His Majesty opened Parliament last year, he declared 2025 a Year of Transformation to the Promised Land. This was more than a symbolic theme. It was presented as a call for urgency and results across all sectors of government and society.

The transformation vision emphasised practical improvements in people’s lives. The speech highlighted the need to strengthen healthcare, improve education outcomes, create jobs, accelerate technological progress and expand support for vulnerable groups, including youth and the elderly.

Governance, accountability and citizen participation

One of the strongest directives in the speech focused on governance and the relationship between citizens and public institutions. Parliament was urged to improve accessibility and transparency, including the use of technology to make laws, parliamentary debates and government information more available to the public.

Economic transformation and job creation

A central pillar of the directives focused on economic transformation and employment creation. His Majesty called for a stronger, more competitive economy driven by private-sector growth, entrepreneurship and investment.

Mega infrastructure projects as growth drivers

The address placed significant emphasis on major infrastructure projects as catalysts for economic growth and national development. Among the projects highlighted were water infrastructure developments, transport upgrades and energy initiatives.

Fiscal discipline and economic resilience

The speech also addressed fiscal realities and the need for prudent financial management, alongside economic diversification to strengthen resilience.

Digital transformation and modern infrastructure

Government was urged to accelerate digital transformation, improve connectivity and expand access to technology while investing in water, transport and energy infrastructure.

Healthcare as a national priority

His Majesty highlighted the need for well-equipped hospitals and clinics, reliable availability of medicines and improved healthcare infrastructure to ensure access to care for all citizens.

Education and human capital development

Education was described as the bedrock of national development and a key driver of transformation, with emphasis on improving learning environments and preparing young people for the modern economy.

Social protection and dignity for the elderly

Support for vulnerable groups formed an important part of the directives, including strengthening social protection and increasing elderly grants.

Youth empowerment and opportunities

Youth development featured prominently, with calls for expanded opportunities through skills development, entrepreneurship support and leadership training.

From directives to action

Government integrated these directives into the Programme of Action and national budget, demonstrating alignment between national priorities and implementation.

The significance of the upcoming State Opening

The 2026 opening is expected to reflect on progress made, reaffirm national priorities and outline the next phase of implementation.

A moment of national reflection and forward planning

The State Opening of Parliament remains a moment of national reflection and forward planning, bringing together government, Parliament and citizens around shared priorities.
