MBABANE— Mbabane Highlanders AM has confirmed that it has accepted the resignation of Head Coach Ernest Mavuso following a series of challenging results, with the club stating that the decision was made in the best interests of the team.
In a statement released on 03 March 2026, the club said Mavuso elected to step down after assessing the team’s current position on the log. The coach, who joined at the start of the season, had been tasked with reshaping the squad and building a competitive side capable of delivering sustainable success. Management indicated that he was given full support and time to implement his football philosophy.
Speaking on his decision, Mavuso acknowledged that recent performances had not met expectations. “When I look at where the team currently sits on the log, I have to concede that perhaps the players need a change,” he said. He added that the squad was no longer responding as expected to the tactical approach introduced in training, and that this had carried into match performances. Despite the setback, he expressed confidence in the club’s future and wished the team success going forward.
Club President Shawn Mkhize described the resignation as difficult to accept, citing Mavuso’s strong coaching record and history of winning trophies while promoting an attractive style of football. He said the club respects the coach’s decision, particularly given the team’s current circumstances, and reiterated its commitment to restoring competitive momentum.
Mbabane Highlanders AM thanked Mavuso for his professionalism, commitment and contribution to the club, stating that further announcements regarding the coaching position will be made in due course.
