MBABANE – Born in 2002 in Ngculwini, Manzini, Mandlenkhosi Groening is not just passionate about poetry, he is poetry.
While many poets find their voice on stage, Groening discovered that his power lies not in recitation, but in writing. After deep introspection, he realized that spoken word was not his strongest medium. Instead of abandoning his craft, he embraced the written word and chose a path less common among young poets in Eswatini: publishing.
In a bold move that defied both age and circumstance, the young student successfully published his poetry collection, ‘Fill the Void’, on Amazon Kindle. The step marked a significant milestone, not only for Groening personally, but for emerging writers who often doubt whether their voices can travel beyond their immediate communities.
Currently, Groening has written more than 100 poems, with 46 of them published on the global digital platform. What began as a form of self-relief gradually evolved into passion, and eventually into purpose. Writing became his safe space, then his mission.
His poetry serves as a vessel for the tormented and heartbroken, those wrestling with silence, grief, longing, and emotional unrest. Through carefully chosen words and haunting imagery, Groening captures the complexity of human emotion, often exploring themes of darkness, healing, and self-discovery.
His work has not gone unnoticed. In an international review, Chris Schneider described Fill the Void as “a hauntingly beautiful poetry collection that explores the depths of human emotion through the lens of darkness.” Such recognition affirms what many readers already feel, that Groening’s writing resonates beyond borders.
Despite his youth and academic commitments, Groening continues to write with remarkable depth and discipline. For him, poetry is not a hobby. It is identity. It is expression. It is survival.
As he continues to publish and refine his voice, Mandlenkhosi Groening stands as a reminder that sometimes the quietest writers carry the loudest truths, and that even from Ngculwini, Manzini, words can echo across the world.
