MANZINI – Special Olympics Eswatini is hosting an intensive four-day national coaches training programme from 9 to 12 March at the SISEMA Conference and Accommodation Centre in Manzini.
Twelve school-based coaches are enhancing their technical skills through expert-led workshops to better support athletes with intellectual disabilities across the Kingdom.
The programme brings together educators from different regions, bridging gaps in inclusive sports development and ensuring that every athlete has access to high-quality mentorship within their local communities. According to a statement by Special Olympics Eswatini, the training aims to equip coaches with specialised knowledge and practical tools to nurture athletes of all abilities.
The sessions are facilitated by Joe Mutua, a highly experienced coach from Special Olympics Kenya, who has spent over a decade developing inclusive sporting environments across Africa. Under his guidance, participants explore adaptive physical education techniques, psychological approaches to coaching, and strategies to engage athletes with developmental challenges.
“Throughout the four-day programme, participants take part in interactive sessions, collaborative group discussions, and hands-on practical demonstrations,” the statement explains.
Key focus areas include athlete-centred coaching methodologies, inclusive sports strategies, and creating positive team cultures that protect and empower athletes. These elements are designed to enhance the coaches’ understanding of their athletes’ needs while strengthening their professional confidence to deliver structured and supportive training programmes in their respective regions.
Organisers highlighted that empowering local coaches is a crucial step towards fostering equality in sport. By strengthening the capacity of educators, Special Olympics Eswatini continues to champion inclusion, dignity, and active participation for athletes who often face barriers in mainstream sporting activities.
The initiative also provides a platform for knowledge exchange among sports practitioners across the country. Coaches are expected to return to their schools better prepared to nurture talent, encourage participation, and foster a sense of belonging. This programme underscores a firm commitment to building communities where every athlete is supported to thrive.
By investing in local coaching expertise, Special Olympics Eswatini is not only improving technical skills but also reinforcing a culture of inclusion and excellence in sport for athletes of all abilities.
