MBABANE— As thousands of emaSwati gathered for the national prayer in Lobamba, transport operators worked against the odds to ensure worshippers arrived safely, despite ongoing fuel shortages and rising petrol costs across the country.

Sabelo Dlamini, CEO of the Eswatini National Road Transportation, described the situation as both challenging and deeply concerning, noting that operators had to make personal sacrifices to keep services running during one of the country’s most significant spiritual gatherings.

“We faced serious difficulties, especially with fuel shortages, but that did not stop us from serving the nation,” said Dlamini.

For many drivers, the Easter period became a test of endurance. Long hours spent in fuel queues meant less time to rest, yet the responsibility of transporting passengers remained a priority. Some operators reportedly slept in their vehicles while waiting for fuel, determined not to disappoint commuters relying on them.

Across the country, long queues at fuel stations have become a common sight, reflecting the growing strain on daily life. Passengers, too, felt the impact, often waiting longer for transport but expressing appreciation for drivers who continued to show up despite the challenges.

Dlamini warned that the fuel crisis is no longer just an inconvenience but a national concern. He pointed to sharp and unpredictable fuel price increases, saying they have affected the entire economy, with the transport sector among the hardest hit.

In response, the Eswatini National Road Transportation plans to engage the Government of Eswatini on possible fare adjustments and long term solutions to stabilize the industry.

Despite the pressure, transport operators continue to demonstrate resilience keeping the nation moving when it matters most.

Despite the ongoing crisis many operators said they remain committed to serving communities with some passengers praising their dedication during the national prayer period which highlighted both the hardship and resilience within the transport sector in Eswatini and underscored urgent need for sustainable fuel solutions and policy intervention to support drivers and ensure reliable transport services across the country going forward moving ahead
