EZULWINI– Thousands of emaSwati farmers are experiencing improved livelihoods as the Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE) expands irrigation and rural development programmes designed to strengthen food production, employment and economic growth.
Through its flagship projects, including the Komati Downstream Development Project and the Lower Usuthu Smallholder Irrigation Project, EWADE continues to bring water infrastructure and agricultural support closer to communities, enabling farmers to move from subsistence to more structured and productive farming systems.
Speaking during a recent engagement, Chief Executive Officer Samson Sithole said the organisation’s focus is on delivering practical solutions that improve livelihoods and create sustainable opportunities. He noted that irrigation development plays a critical role in increasing productivity while supporting rural inclusion.
Farmers working within these programmes are now able to access water, markets and technical support, allowing them to grow crops more efficiently and generate income. This shift is helping communities build resilience, particularly in areas affected by climate variability and limited rainfall.
EWADE’s impact continues to expand, with thousands of emaSwati benefiting directly and indirectly from its projects. The organisation has also contributed to job creation across construction, agriculture and agribusiness value chains, strengthening local economies and improving household incomes.
Beyond production, the programmes are supporting commercialisation, enabling farmers to participate in market-oriented agriculture and improve their competitiveness. This approach is aligned with national efforts to enhance food security while promoting inclusive economic development.
EWADE’s work has also positioned Eswatini among countries making progress in irrigation and rural transformation, with its model reflecting the importance of integrating infrastructure, governance and farmer support systems.
As investment in agriculture continues, the organisation remains focused on expanding its reach, ensuring that more communities benefit from sustainable farming opportunities and improved livelihoods.
