LOBAMBA– His Majesty King Mswati III has expressed deep gratitude to God and the people of Eswatini for standing by him through the many challenges he faced over the course of his 40-year reign.
Speaking during the 40/58 double celebrations held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at the Somhlolo National Stadium, the King reflected on his historic ascension to the throne on April 25, 1986, describing it as a moment filled with uncertainty, responsibility and immense pressure.
His Majesty recalled that he was standing at the very same spot on a day with hot weather conditions, during his coronation as he did during the current celebrations, a memory that brought back vivid emotions from that defining day.
At just 18 years old, dressed in traditional attire, the young King addressed the nation for the first time as monarch, taking over from his late father, King Sobhuza II, who had ruled the country for 61 years. King Sobhuza II, who passed away four years prior to the coronation, remains one of the longest-serving monarchs in history and is widely revered for his wisdom and leadership.
Faced with such a towering legacy, King Mswati III admitted that the odds appeared to be stacked against him. He told the thousands gathered at the stadium that even the paper he read from during his coronation trembled in his hands as he battled nerves and self-doubt, questioning whether he would be able to fulfil the enormous responsibility placed upon him.
Despite these early fears, the King said he drew strength from his faith in God and the unwavering support of Emaswati, as well as encouragement from the international community. This support, he said, enabled him to persevere and grow into his role over the decades.
Reflecting on his father’s influence, His Majesty expressed appreciation for the guidance and values imparted by King Sobhuza II, which he described as a “playbook” that shaped his leadership approach. Among these was the principle of maintaining peace and avoiding enmity.
The King noted that his father believed in having no enemies and fostering harmonious relations both within the country and internationally. He said he had remained committed to this principle throughout his reign, ensuring that Eswatini continues to enjoy peaceful relations with other nations.
“I promised to follow in my father’s footsteps, and I hope I have remained true to that promise,” he said.
His Majesty also extended heartfelt thanks to the people of Eswatini for their continued loyalty and support, including their contribution to the success of the double celebrations. He further acknowledged the support received from friends of Eswatini beyond its borders.
The King concluded by reaffirming his commitment to serving the nation with humility, faith and dedication, as he continues to build on the legacy entrusted to him.
