- Government Launches Important Community Development Initiative
BY MBONO MDLULI
MBABANE – The Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, through the Microprojects Programme in partnership with Engineers in Action, has officially launched the Manzimbongolo Suspended Footbridge Project under the Ndzingeni Inkhundla.
The project, according to the Ministry, is expected to significantly improve safe access within the community, particularly for schoolchildren and residents who have long struggled to cross the river during periods of heavy rainfall.
According to community members, the name “Manzimbongolo” originated from a tragic incident in which a donkey drowned while attempting to cross the river, highlighting the dangers that residents have faced over the years.
Safer Access For Schoolchildren
The river has reportedly remained a major challenge for the community, especially learners who are often unable to attend school whenever water levels rise.
Government officials said the suspended footbridge project will provide a safer and more reliable crossing point for residents, while also improving mobility and access to essential services.
Speaking during the launch, Member of Parliament Gcina Magagula applauded the Microprojects Programme for continuously supporting the Meleti community, which he described as one of the most disadvantaged communities within the constituency.
Magagula encouraged community members to work together and fully support the initiative in order to create opportunities for future development projects.
International Collaboration Strengthens Project
The project is scheduled to run from 18 May 2026 until 24 July 2026.
As part of the collaboration efforts, students from various universities in the United States are expected to join the community during the construction phase.
Representing the Microprojects Programme, Simphiwe Nhlapho congratulated the community for successfully securing the footbridge project among numerous applications received from across the country.
Nhlapho urged residents to maintain unity, respect one another and warmly welcome the international students who will assist with the construction work.
More Footbridges Planned This Year
Nhlapho further revealed that the Manzimbongolo Footbridge is one of eight suspended footbridges expected to be constructed this year as part of Government’s broader community development efforts.
Officials say the initiative demonstrates Government’s continued commitment to improving the lives of emaSwati through practical, community-driven infrastructure projects.
Observers believe the footbridge will not only improve safety but also contribute to better educational access, stronger community connectivity and improved daily living conditions for residents in the area.
The launch of the project marks another important development milestone for the Ndzingeni Inkhundla and reflects ongoing efforts to expand infrastructure development in rural communities across the country.
