MANKAYANE – What began as quiet unease in the rural community of Lushikishini has ended in a wave of relief after a 29-year-old man was arrested for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition, bringing hope to residents who had grown increasingly anxious about rising crime.
For weeks, community members in the Phosela area had reportedly lived in fear, as incidents of housebreaking and theft cast a shadow over their daily lives. Doors were double-locked earlier than usual, and neighbours kept a closer watch on each other’s homes. The sense of safety many once took for granted had slowly begun to fade.
That fear started to ease on the evening of May 17, 2026, when Manzini Regional police, acting on intelligence and community tip-offs, closed in on the suspect at around 7:20 PM. According to police, the man was found in possession of an unlicensed black pistol and two live rounds of ammunition, an alarming discovery that confirmed the community’s worst suspicions.
Residents played a crucial role in the arrest. Their willingness to share information with law enforcement not only helped track the suspect but also demonstrated the power of community policing. One local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the moment as “a turning point,” saying, “We were scared, but we also knew we had to stand together. Now we can breathe again.”
Police investigations have linked the suspect to several housebreaking and theft cases in the area, deepening the impact of the arrest. Authorities say that when officers moved in, the suspect allegedly attempted to withdraw the firearm, but it was quickly established to be unlicensed.
The suspect has since appeared in court and was remanded in custody, as investigations continue.
For Lushikishini residents, the arrest is more than just a legal process,it is a restoration of peace. It also serves as a reminder that collaboration between communities and law enforcement can be a powerful tool in tackling crime and rebuilding trust.
