MHLUMENI – A major smuggling attempt along Eswatini’s border was foiled when Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) troops intercepted illicit cigarettes valued at approximately E1.67 million during an early morning patrol in the Lubombo Region.
The interception occurred on 08 June 2026 at around 0500hrs in the Sitsatsaweni area, Mhlumeni, where soldiers on border duty detected a white Toyota Quantum, registration number ASD 797 DM, suspected of transporting illegal goods from the Republic of Mozambique into Eswatini.
Upon being approached and chased by the troops, the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into nearby terrain, escaping arrest.
The vehicle was later found loaded with 79 boxes and 16 cartons of illicit cigarettes, with the consignment confirmed to be worth E1 671 666.63.
The seized vehicle and contraband were handed over to the relevant law enforcement agency for further investigations, while efforts to trace the suspects continue.
The UEDF Office of the Commander commended the vigilance and swift response of troops deployed along the border, noting their continued commitment to safeguarding national security and curbing cross-border criminal activities.
The Commander further expressed appreciation to members of the public who continue to assist security forces with information, urging sustained cooperation in the fight against smuggling and other forms of criminality along the Kingdom’s border lines.
He also issued a stern warning against illegal activities along the border, reaffirming the army’s resolve to intensify patrols and strengthen operations aimed at dismantling smuggling networks.
