MALKERNS – The countdown to the 2026 Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival has taken a stylish turn as organisers have unveiled a bold fashion challenge that invites festivalgoers to step into the shoes of Africa’s greatest heroes, heroines, legends and iconic characters.

Under the festival’s 2026 fashion theme, “Kwasukasukela” (Once Upon a Time), attendees are being encouraged to create two distinctive outfits inspired by African storytelling, history and imagination for the two-day cultural extravaganza set for August 1-2, 2026.

The announcement forms part of Luju’s broader theme, “A Return to the African Future,” which celebrates African creativity, heritage and innovation through food, fashion, music and culture.

According to the festival organisers, the fashion concept challenges attendees to draw inspiration from African heroes, heroines, legendary figures and even imagined characters from the continent’s rich storytelling traditions.

Rather than simply dressing up, festivalgoers are being asked to transform narratives into wearable art through contemporary fashion.

The festival encourages participants to experiment with woven textures, symbolic patterns, natural materials and inventive recreations of familiar stories, allowing each outfit to become a visual interpretation of “Once Upon a Time” through colour, fabric and design.

Festival attendees are expected to showcase two different fashion looks over two days, each reflecting their own interpretation of the Kwasukasukela theme.

The challenge is designed to make fashion one of the centrepieces of the annual lifestyle festival, giving guests an opportunity to express creativity while celebrating African identity and storytelling.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival, one of Eswatini’s premier cultural events, known for blending world-class entertainment, culinary experiences, fashion and artistic expression.

Festivalgoers, designers, fashion enthusiasts and creatives from across Southern Africa are expected to embrace the challenge and contribute to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.

The fashion showcase will take place during the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival on August 1 and 2, 2026, in Eswatini.

The annual event attracts thousands of visitors from across the region, making it one of the country’s most anticipated cultural and tourism experiences.

By centering the fashion experience around Kwasukasukela, organisers aim to reconnect audiences with African stories while encouraging modern interpretations of cultural heritage.

The theme highlights the power of storytelling as a vehicle for preserving identity, celebrating historical figures and inspiring future generations through creativity.

It also aligns with Luju’s vision of promoting African excellence by merging tradition with innovation.

Participation is simple: attendees are encouraged to arrive with two themed outfits, one for each festival day, inspired by an African hero, heroine, legend or iconic character.

Whether drawing inspiration from historical figures, folklore, cultural icons or entirely imagined characters, festivalgoers are free to use fashion as a storytelling tool.

Every look becomes an opportunity to tell a personal story while contributing to the festival’s collective celebration of African culture.

As anticipation builds towards August, one thing is becoming clear: Luju 2026 is not just asking people to attend a festival—it is inviting them to become part of the story. From ancient legends to futuristic visions, the stage is set for fashion lovers to bring Africa’s past, present and future to life, one unforgettable outfit at a time.
