MBABANE – Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) has vowed to continue its fight against illegal activities along the Kingdom’s borders, warning that security operations will remain intensified to protect the country from cross-border crime.
The warning follows the arrest of two men allegedly caught attempting to smuggle 20.65 kilogrammes of dagga worth an estimated E21 000 into the Republic of South Africa.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Commander-UEDF, soldiers on routine patrol intercepted the suspects at Nsalitje in the Shiselweni Region at about 8:55am on July 20, 2026.
The suspects, aged 23 and 30, both from the Hluthi area, were allegedly found carrying the dagga without a permit while trying to cross the border. The dagga and the two suspects were handed over to the relevant law enforcement agency for further investigation.
The UEDF said dagga smuggling continues to pose a challenge along the Kingdom’s border lines despite ongoing efforts by the defence force to curb the illegal trade. It assured the nation that its soldiers remain committed to safeguarding Eswatini’s territorial integrity and protecting the lives and property of emaSwati.
The Office of the Commander-UEDF thanked members of the public who continue to assist the defence force by providing information that helps prevent cross-border crime. It appealed for continued cooperation, saying community support remains vital in the fight against smuggling and other illegal activities.
The Commander-UEDF also issued a stern warning to those involved in criminal activities along the Kingdom’s borders, stressing that the defence force will not relent in carrying out its constitutional mandate of protecting and defending Eswatini. He further commended UEDF troops for their dedication, vigilance and commitment in securing the country’s borders
