MBABANE – For a university student, the journey from the lecture room to the workplace can be filled with uncertainty, with many wondering whether the knowledge gained from textbooks and examinations will be enough to navigate the demands of a real career.
That transition is set to become easier for students at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) following a new partnership with The Luke Commission, which will expose students to practical work environments while they are still pursuing their studies.
The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 23, 2025, launching a partnership aimed at bridging the gap between academic learning and practical experience.
The partnership will benefit students pursuing studies in health sciences, information technology (IT), engineering, administration and social sciences.
Through the agreement, students will participate in annual field excursions to The Luke Commission’s Miracle Campus, where they will gain first-hand exposure to professional environments and see how knowledge acquired in the classroom is applied to real-life challenges.
The students will also have opportunities to receive mentorship from experienced professionals and potentially access internship placements.
For students who have spent years attending lectures and completing assignments, the opportunity to step into a working environment could offer a valuable glimpse into their future careers.
The initiative is expected to help students develop practical skills, build professional confidence and gain a better understanding of workplace expectations before they graduate.
UNESWA Vice Chancellor Professor Justice M. Thwala said the partnership was an important step in strengthening the connection between university education and the practical needs of society.
“Education must go beyond the classroom and equip our students with the knowledge, skills and exposure they need to make a meaningful contribution to society,” said Prof. Thwala.
He said partnerships such as the one with The Luke Commission would give students opportunities to learn from experienced professionals and complement their academic training with practical exposure.
UNESWA said connecting academic learning with practical application remained central to its mission of delivering education that actively impacts society and improves lives.
The university also expressed its appreciation to the leadership and team at The Luke Commission for partnering with UNESWA in preparing the next generation of professionals.
The Luke Commission’s Miracle Campus is expected to serve as an important learning environment where students can interact with professionals, observe their work and gain insight into how different skills are applied in real-world settings.
The partnership will further create opportunities for collaboration in areas such as research and innovation, allowing students and professionals to exchange knowledge, share ideas and explore solutions to challenges facing society.
The collaboration comes at a time when practical experience is increasingly important for young graduates entering a competitive employment market.
While academic qualifications remain important, employers also seek graduates who possess practical skills, adaptability and the ability to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom.
Through field excursions, mentorship and potential internship placements, the partnership aims to give UNESWA students a stronger foundation as they prepare to enter the world of work.
The initiative could also encourage students to think beyond simply securing employment and consider how their knowledge and skills can be used to develop innovative solutions and respond to challenges affecting communities.
The signing of the MoU therefore represents more than an agreement between two institutions. It is an investment in young people and in the future of Eswatini.
By bringing together UNESWA’s academic expertise and The Luke Commission’s practical experience, the partnership aims to create opportunities for students to grow academically, professionally and personally.
For the students who will take part in the programme, the experience could help bridge the gap between what they learn at university and what they will encounter in their future careers.
