MANZINI– Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Honourable Bongani Nzima says government’s investment in the arts sector is expected to create more opportunities for local creatives, strengthen regional programmes and support the growth of Eswatini’s creative economy.
Speaking during the official launch of the mobile stage unit and reheasal space at the Manzini Arts Centre on Thursday, Nzima described the development as an important step towards creating a more supportive environment for artists. “This is indeed a proud moment, not only for Eswatini creatives, but for the arts and culture sector,” he said.
Nzima said the mobile stage equipment was purchased using part of the E3.86 million in local funds allocated to the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC) for sound equipment and a motor vehicle. He said the equipment would support regional arts programmes and allow artists and festival organisers to access professional facilities at lower costs than commercial rates.
The Minister stated that the stage had already been used during the Lubombo Regional Festival, which formed part of the ongoing NACA Awards programme. He added that plans were in place to use the equipment in other regions to improve arts and culture activities and bring them closer to higher standards.
Nzima also highlighted the economic value of the creative industry, noting that festivals contribute to the growth of local businesses and create employment opportunities. “Such equipment will also boost the economy because festivals help to grow local businesses and create jobs,” he said.
He said government remained committed to supporting the arts and culture sector because of its role in preserving cultural heritage, creating jobs and improving Eswatini’s image beyond its borders. Nzima encouraged artists to take their craft seriously and use the opportunities created within the sector to build sustainable careers.
“Building more opportunities for artists will help them succeed,” he said, adding that local creatives could eventually gain international recognition and earn a living through their work.
