MASUNDVWINI— Princess Ntsandvweni has taken on a new role this Umhlanga season, leading young Imbali maidens in cutting sacred reeds at Masundvini for the first time.
The occasion marked an important moment for the young maidens, who gathered at Masundvini with excitement as they carried out one of Eswatini’s most cherished cultural traditions.
For many of the maidens, the change of venue has brought a fresh sense of excitement to the annual reed cutting exercise. In previous years, the young Imbali collected reeds at Bham’sakhe, but this year His Majesty King Mswati III assigned them to Masundvini.
The move has been warmly welcomed by the maidens, with some saying Masundvini is closer to their communities and easier to reach on foot.
Under the leadership of Princess Ntsandvweni, the young Imbali approached the exercise with enthusiasm, discipline and a strong sense of responsibility. Their presence at Masundvini reflected the important role young emaSwati continue to play in preserving and carrying forward the country’s cultural heritage.
The reed cutting is an important part of the build up to the annual Umhlanga Reed Dance, bringing together young maidens from different parts of the country in a celebration rooted in Eswatini’s culture and traditions.
As the maidens worked through the reed fields, the atmosphere was filled with songs, excitement and a shared sense of purpose. The experience also provided an opportunity for the younger generation to participate directly in a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
For Princess Ntsandvweni, leading the young Imbali at Masundvini for the first time added significance to this year’s cultural gathering. Her leadership placed her at the centre of an exercise that combines cultural participation, responsibility and unity among the young maidens.
The young Imbali’s arrival at Masundvini also demonstrated the continued enthusiasm surrounding Umhlanga, as thousands of maidens prepare to take part in the annual ceremony.
With reeds now being gathered, the excitement is steadily building towards the main Umhlanga celebrations, where the maidens will showcase their dedication to preserving Eswatini’s cultural identity.
