MBABANE– Women, young people, entrepreneurs and creatives gathered at Sunrise Civic Centre (Mawala Hall) in Siteki to celebrate their contribution to sustainable economic growth during International Youth and Women’s Day 2026.
Held under the theme, “Empowering Women and Youth for Sustainable Economic Growth,” the event provided a platform for participants to showcase their businesses, products and creative work while connecting with others and exploring opportunities for growth.
The gathering formed part of ongoing reflections on 50 years of partnership between the European Union (EU) and Eswatini, highlighting the importance of investing in people as a foundation for inclusive and sustainable development.
For many of the women and young people present, the event was more than a commemoration. It offered an opportunity to put their work before a wider audience, exchange ideas and learn about possibilities that could help strengthen their livelihoods.
Women led and youth led businesses displayed a range of products, demonstrating the creativity, determination and entrepreneurial spirit present within local communities.
Joining the commemoration, EU Deputy Ambassador José Becerra highlighted the importance of continued investment in women and young people, reaffirming the EU’s support for Government initiatives aimed at advancing women’s rights and creating opportunities for the youth.
“This commitment is reflected through EU-supported initiatives implemented by partners such as COSPE Southern Africa,” Becerra said, noting that such programmes are helping women strengthen their economic participation while creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, pursue livelihoods and contribute to their communities.
The event also provided an opportunity for participants to build networks, potentially opening doors for collaboration and new markets.
Beyond the displays and celebrations, the gathering highlighted a broader message: empowering women and young people can help communities build stronger and more sustainable economies.
As the EU continues its engagement with communities across Eswatini, events such as the Siteki commemoration provide spaces for local voices to be heard while celebrating progress and encouraging greater participation in economic development.
The day ultimately placed women and youth where they belong at the heart of conversations about Eswatini’s economic future, with their skills, ideas and enterprises playing an important role in shaping stronger communities.
