PIGGS PEAK– Businesses in Piggs Peak are currently under inspection as the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade intensifies efforts to enforce compliance with Eswatini’s trading laws and regulations through a Government-led 60-day compliance operation.
The inspection exercise, being conducted by the Ministry’s Inspectorate Task Team comprising 11 stakeholders, seeks to promote an orderly and compliant trading environment while protecting consumers and ensuring that businesses operate fairly and within the law.
According to the Ministry, the inspections are part of a Cabinet-directed rigorous on-the-ground operation and are not targeted at specific businesses. Instead, the exercise is aimed at strengthening compliance with the regulatory framework governing business operations in the country.
The Inspectorate Task Team is examining several areas of compliance, including trading licences, business registration, health and safety standards, immigration requirements, tax compliance, employment and labour-related practices, as well as unfair and deceptive business practices.
The inspections also cover consumer protection and fair trading matters that fall within the mandate of the Government authorities involved in the exercise.
The Ministry said the Piggs Peak inspections are still ongoing and that the number of businesses inspected will depend on the operational programme of the Inspectorate Task Team. A consolidated figure will be provided once the exercise has progressed further.
With the inspections only recently commencing, the Ministry said it would be premature to identify particular violations as established findings. Verified findings will be communicated once the inspection process has advanced and the information has been properly assessed.
Where non-compliance is established, businesses may be directed to rectify the violations or face other enforcement measures provided for under the relevant legislation. The Ministry emphasised that enforcement will be undertaken fairly and in accordance with due process.
Consumer protection is also among the areas being addressed during the exercise. Matters such as pricing, product information, expiry dates, labelling and the accuracy of weighing and measuring equipment may be examined where they fall within the mandate of the relevant authorities involved.
The Ministry has encouraged consumers to remain vigilant and report suspected unfair trading practices through the appropriate channels. Consumers are advised to retain evidence such as receipts, photographs of products or displayed prices and details of the business involved, as this information can assist authorities when investigating complaints.
Consumers are also urged to avoid purchasing products they suspect are unsafe or expired and to report such concerns to the relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has called on business owners to view compliance as an everyday responsibility rather than something that should only be addressed when inspectors arrive.
Business owners have been encouraged to ensure that their licences, registrations and other required documentation remain valid and up to date, while ensuring that their operations comply with applicable trading and consumer protection requirements.
The Ministry noted that a compliant business environment benefits businesses, consumers and the wider economy.
The Piggs Peak exercise forms part of a broader 60-day compliance operation and is not an isolated intervention. According to the Ministry, compliance monitoring remains an ongoing Government responsibility, with inspections to be undertaken in accordance with the operational programme.
Beyond the current exercise, the Ministry said it will continue strengthening compliance monitoring, stakeholder awareness and consumer education, with the long-term objective of building a culture of compliance and ensuring that consumers are protected while businesses operate within a fair, transparent and predictable regulatory environment.
