MANKAYANE— The starting line is being redrawn in Mankayane as the Highway Half Marathon makes its return to the Athletics Eswatini calendar, bringing with it renewed hopes of stronger road running, healthier communities and greater opportunities for athletes.
Speaking during the official launch of the Highway Half Marathon 2026 at Highway Covenant Tabernacle Church on Thursday, Athletics Eswatini Operations Officer Nomcebo Simelane welcomed the return of the race, describing it as an important addition to the country’s road-running programme.
Simelane delivered a message on behalf of the Athletics Eswatini President, who was unable to attend the launch.
She said the return of the Highway Half Marathon demonstrated the organisers’ continued commitment to road running and creating opportunities for both competitive and recreational athletes.
“The Highway Half Marathon is not new to the Athletics Eswatini calendar. We therefore warmly welcome and appreciate its return,” she said.
The race, which is now preparing for its 2026 edition, is expected to bring together athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, sponsors and members of the community.
Simelane highlighted the broader importance of road races, saying they play a significant role in promoting healthy lifestyles, developing athletes and bringing communities together.
She encouraged the organisers to continue growing the event and positioning it among Eswatini’s leading road-running competitions.
However, she stressed that the success of any road race goes beyond runners crossing the finish line, noting the importance of proper planning, safety and technical compliance.
Simelane particularly urged race organisers to prioritise Athletics Eswatini licensing, explaining that licensing is not merely about paying a fee but ensuring that races meet required standards.
Through the licensing process, Athletics Eswatini can provide technical guidance, officials and oversight while supporting organisers with route planning, timing, safety, medical arrangements and results.
She encouraged race organisers to engage Athletics Eswatini early during the planning stages to ensure races are professionally coordinated and safe for participants.
To the Highway Half Marathon organisers, Simelane commended their efforts to revive the event and expressed appreciation for their partnership with Athletics Eswatini.
She also thanked athletes, officials, volunteers, sponsors and other stakeholders for contributing to the growth of athletics in Eswatini.
The Highway Half Marathon is expected to continue its role as both a sporting and community-focused initiative, with organisers aiming to build a sustainable event that can grow for years to come.
