MBABANE– EmaSwati are set to enjoy another long weekend after Government officially confirmed that Monday, September 7, 2026, will be observed as a public holiday, extending the Independence Day celebrations beyond Sunday.
The Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Friday that although Independence Day falls on Sunday, September 6, the holiday will automatically be observed the following day in accordance with the country’s Public Holidays Act.
The announcement effectively gives workers, families and communities a three-day weekend stretching from Saturday through Monday, providing an additional opportunity for emaSwati to rest, spend time with loved ones and reflect on the country’s journey as an independent nation.
In a statement dated September 4, 2026, the Ministry explained that the arrangement was not an additional discretionary holiday, but one provided for by law whenever a recognised public holiday falls on a Sunday.
“If any such day falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be observed as a public holiday,” the Ministry quoted the Public Holidays Act as providing.
As a result, Monday, September 7, will be recognised as a public holiday and considered a non-business day.
The confirmation is expected to be welcomed by many emaSwati who will now have an extended period to participate in Independence Day activities, visit relatives or simply take a break before returning to their normal routines on Tuesday.
THREE-DAY BREAK FOR FAMILIES
For families, the long weekend presents an opportunity for greater interaction at a time when busy work and school schedules often limit the amount of time people spend together.
Some families are expected to use the weekend to travel between urban centres and rural communities, while others may attend social, cultural and community activities associated with the Independence Day period.
The extended break could also provide a welcome boost for domestic tourism and hospitality establishments as residents take advantage of the additional day to visit recreational facilities, restaurants, tourism attractions and accommodation establishments.
Local businesses operating in leisure, food, transport and entertainment could similarly benefit from increased movement during the holiday period.
The Independence Day holiday carries particular national significance as it provides emaSwati with an opportunity to celebrate the Kingdom’s sovereignty, history and development while looking ahead to the country’s future.
PUBLIC URGED TO PREPARE
Government has urged members of the public as well as institutions to take note of the holiday and make the necessary preparations.
The announcement means people requiring services from institutions normally closed during public holidays are encouraged to attend to important matters beforehand or wait until normal business operations resume.
Essential and emergency services are, however, generally expected to continue operating according to their respective holiday arrangements.
With increased travelling also expected during the long weekend, motorists are encouraged to exercise patience and caution on the country’s roads, particularly on major routes linking towns and rural areas.
The confirmation of Monday as a holiday adds an extra day of relaxation to the Independence Day celebrations, giving emaSwati more time to appreciate the significance of the national occasion while reconnecting with family, community and country.
The statement was issued by Ministry of Home Affairs Principal Secretary N.R. Nxumalo, who called upon the public and all relevant institutions to take note of the arrangement.
