MBABANE — What began as a small idea during lockdown has now been recognised as one of Eswatini consumers’ favourite artisan creations.

Crochet by Selu, founded by Seluliwe Mdluli, walked away with the Consumers’ Favourite Artisan Product award at the Made in Eswatini Consumer Choice Awards 2026, held at Hilton Garden Inn.

For Mdluli, the recognition represents more than an award. It is a reflection of the consumers who have supported the brand from its early days and a sign that handmade creativity can grow into something people genuinely value.

Speaking after the win, Mdluli said the award affirmed the effort that goes into every piece created by Crochet by Selu.

“It means so much to me because this award is a reflection of the people who have supported Crochet by Selu from the beginning,” she said.

She said the recognition also reminded her of how far the brand had come since its beginnings during lockdown.

According to Mdluli, one of the reasons consumers connected with Crochet by Selu was its authenticity, with every item made by hand with attention to detail and intention.

“I also think people appreciate that I am constantly creating and pushing crochet beyond what they normally expect it to be. I want people to see crochet as fashion, not just a craft,” she said.

The award comes as local businesses continue to seek recognition through consumer choice, placing the spotlight on products created by Eswatini entrepreneurs for the local market.

For Crochet by Selu, the recognition also provides an opportunity to build on its growing presence while demonstrating the potential of the creative industry to turn skills and ideas into sustainable brands.

Mdluli acknowledged that the journey has not been without challenges. Growing demand has brought pressure around production, while balancing creativity with the business side has required careful planning.

“As a handmade brand, there is only so much you can produce in a certain amount of time,” she said.

She said the business has responded by improving its planning, building a team and putting systems in place, while remaining consistent.

Looking ahead, Mdluli wants to use the award as motivation to expand Crochet by Selu’s production capacity, strengthen its team and take the brand beyond Eswatini.

She also hopes to create more opportunities for people in the crochet and wider creative sector.

For the consumers whose votes helped secure the award, Mdluli expressed deep gratitude.

“Every vote, every purchase, every share and every word of encouragement has played a part in getting Crochet by Selu here,” she said.

With the Consumer Choice Award now added to its journey, Crochet by Selu’s story is a reminder that a small creative idea can grow when craftsmanship meets consistency and a community willing to support local talent.
