MBABANE – From the streets of Manzini to the fashion scene of Maputo, Blackdegree is taking Eswatini streetwear across the border.

The Manzini-based fashion brand, led by co-founder and head designer Kwenzie Zwane, is set to represent Eswatini at Fancy Africa’s 10th-anniversary edition in Mozambique from September 28 to October 3.

The appearance forms part of a partnership programme between Luju Festival and Fancy Africa, bringing African creatives together through fashion, culture and collaboration.

For Blackdegree, the Maputo showcase is more than another fashion appearance. It marks another stage in the brand’s growing regional journey, following its appearances at Eswatini fashion platforms, the Luju Fashion Runway and its entry into South Africa’s African fashion retail space through Africarise.

Blackdegree has built its identity around contemporary streetwear infused with African influences, using bold prints, distinctive textiles and statement pieces to create designs that connect modern street culture with African identity.

The brand’s relationship with Luju has played a role in that growth. After making its Luju debut in 2025, Blackdegree returned to the festival’s fashion programme in 2026, giving Zwane another platform to showcase a design approach rooted in African storytelling.

That journey later extended into South Africa through Africarise, a retail platform founded by designer Thula Sindi, where Blackdegree joined a collection of established and emerging African designers.

The Maputo opportunity now takes that regional exposure further, placing an Eswatini streetwear label in a creative space that connects designers and audiences from across Africa.

For Zwane, fashion is not simply about clothing. He has previously spoken about the importance of African designers using fashion to document their histories, identities and lived experiences instead of relying solely on international narratives.

That philosophy continues to shape Blackdegree’s work, where cultural references are incorporated into contemporary designs without separating African identity from modern streetwear.

As the brand heads to Mozambique, its story reflects a wider movement of Eswatini creatives seeking opportunities beyond the Kingdom while carrying their local identity with them.

Blackdegree’s Maputo appearance will therefore give Zwane and his team another opportunity to test their designs in a new market, connect with other African creatives and place Eswatini fashion within a broader continental conversation.

From Manzini to Luju, Africarise and now Fancy Africa, Blackdegree’s latest move shows that the journey of Eswatini fashion is no longer confined to home ground.
