PIGG’S PEAK — Pigg’s Peak Town Council is positioning its inaugural Inter-Ward Arts and Culture Festival as more than a cultural competition, with plans to use the platform to identify local talent and create pathways into employment, business and the wider creative industry.

The festival, officially introduced during a media briefing on Thursday, will bring together representatives from all six wards of Pigg’s Peak for cultural and artistic competitions at Gobolondlo Hall on October 17, 2026.

The initiative follows the successful hosting of the National Arts and Culture Awards at Gobolondlo Hall and is aimed at creating opportunities for talent within Pigg’s Peak’s communities. The participating categories are expected to include Lutsango, Ingadla, Sibhaca, siSwati poetry, siSwati storytelling, artists and dancers.

According to the Mayor, the Council wants residents to begin viewing artistic talent not only as a passion but also as a potential source of income, employment and business opportunities.

“The festival is about much more than competition,” the Mayor said, highlighting community unity, cultural preservation, talent development and opportunities within the creative industry as key objectives.

The Council also intends to ensure that opportunities do not end when the October competition is over.

Outstanding participants could be linked to further opportunities such as cultural festivals, recording opportunities, arts exhibitions, tourism initiatives, mentorship programmes and other national arts and culture platforms.

Registration will be facilitated through the Pigg’s Peak Town Council Reception, with residents from all six wards encouraged to participate and support their respective wards.

The Council is also calling on businesses, media organisations, cultural institutions and other partners to support the development and promotion of Pigg’s Peak’s creative talent.

The long-term ambition is to establish the festival as an annual cultural platform, eventually expanding it to include cultural tourism, exhibitions, creative-industry development and wider participation.

The Council said the initiative forms part of a broader understanding of town development, arguing that progress should not only be measured through roads, infrastructure and buildings, but also through strong communities, opportunities for residents and the preservation of local identity and heritage.

With all six wards expected to participate, the October festival will provide a platform for Pigg’s Peak residents to showcase their cultural identity while giving local artists and performers an opportunity to be identified and developed.
