MATSAPHA – The Government of Eswatini has pledged to strengthen the country’s Fire and Emergency Services to meet international standards, in a move aimed at improving emergency response and protecting lives, property and livelihoods.
The Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini made the commitment during the third National Fire and Emergency Day commemoration held at Matsapha International Airport on October 19, 2026, linking the development of emergency services to Eswatini’s ambition of attaining first-world status.
“His Majesty’s Government will continue to build the capacity of the Fire and Emergency Services to meet international standards, in line with Eswatini’s vision of attaining first-world status,” Dlamini said.
The pledge underscores the importance of equipping emergency personnel with the capacity to respond effectively to incidents that threaten households, businesses and public infrastructure. Fires can destroy property, disrupt livelihoods and place families under severe financial strain, making an effective response service essential to community safety.
Dlamini said Eswatini was not immune to the dangers posed by fires, highlighting the need for continued government support for efforts to prevent incidents, protect communities and preserve property.
He also acknowledged His Majesty King Mswati III for establishing and supporting the National Fire and Emergency Day commemoration since 2024.
Dlamini said the annual observance raises awareness of fire prevention, strengthens national resilience and reinforces the importance of preparing for emergencies.
“His Majesty’s presence on this occasion underscores the importance that Government attaches to fire safety standards and emergency preparedness,” he said.
He added that the King’s presence affirmed Eswatini’s commitment to expanding emergency services, strengthening institutional capacity and protecting lives and property as a shared national responsibility.
For communities, stronger emergency services can help limit the damage caused by fires and other incidents. However, preventing avoidable emergencies also requires public cooperation, including observing safety precautions, identifying potential hazards and reporting fires promptly.
The government’s commitment to international standards forms part of its broader development ambition. Strengthening the service’s institutional capacity is intended to improve its ability to fulfil its responsibilities and respond to the needs of communities across the Kingdom.
While emergency personnel are central to responding when disaster strikes, public awareness remains an important part of reducing risks. Timely reporting and responsible safety practices can help prevent incidents from escalating and reduce the threat to lives and property.
The government’s pledge places the development of the Fire and Emergency Services within the wider goal of improving public services and building a more resilient nation.
