MBABANE— A simple cake and two donated cows have carried a bigger message of compassion, as Bennet recognised the work of an office caring for vulnerable citizens while strengthening support for social welfare programmes.
Bennet brought a cake to the office as a gesture of appreciation for its commitment to positively impacting the lives of vulnerable citizens. He also donated one cow for social welfare officers and another to support the soon-to-be-introduced soup kitchens in some towns.
While the gesture may appear modest, it comes at a time when social protection and community support remain central to efforts aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable people across Eswatini.
The donation of the cows is particularly significant as the planned soup kitchens are expected to provide an additional form of support to people who may struggle to secure regular meals. The contribution for social welfare officers also recognises the people who work directly with communities and vulnerable families.
The gesture also reflects a broader spirit of community support that has been visible during recent activities involving Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla, whose office is responsible for several social welfare interventions.
Across the country, Dladla has been involved in initiatives bringing Government support closer to communities, including food assistance, housing support and interventions for vulnerable households.
In Mhlumeni, her visit brought attention to a child-headed family whose difficult circumstances prompted intervention, including a pledge to construct a new house for the family. In Shiselweni, four houses were handed over to beneficiaries through collaboration involving Government, Taiwan and the National Disaster Risk Management Agency.
Her engagements have also taken her to communities benefiting from food-for-work initiatives, where vulnerable households have received support aimed at helping them cope with difficult economic circumstances.
These interventions have placed the experiences of ordinary Emaswati at the centre of social welfare discussions, while beneficiaries and community representatives have expressed appreciation for support reaching them.
Against this background, Bennet’s cake and two cows represent more than a donation. They are a reminder that caring for vulnerable citizens is not only a Government responsibility, but a shared responsibility involving individuals, communities, businesses and organisations.
For families facing hardship, even seemingly small acts of kindness can carry significant meaning. And as Eswatini continues strengthening its social protection programmes, such partnerships could help turn compassion into practical support for those who need it most.
