HAWANE– Founder of Kholoza Farm Produce, Siyabonga Dlamini, is making strides in agriculture by producing fresh vegetables using innovative methods in Hawane, Eswatini. Driven by passion and the growing demand for vegetables, he began his farming journey by saving money from piece jobs, cutting personal expenses, and relying on family support despite limited resources.
Dlamini ventured into farming after identifying strong opportunities in Eswatini’s agricultural sector, particularly in vegetable production. Although he faced challenges such as lack of proper irrigation systems, fencing, and farm inputs, he has steadily built a growing enterprise that supplies fresh produce while contributing to local food security and occasional employment.
“I saw big opportunities in agriculture in Eswatini, especially in the demand for vegetables. My passion also drives me into agriculture,” said Dlamini in an interview with Eswatini Positive News.
Based in Hawane, Dlamini has adopted modern farming techniques aimed at improving productivity and sustainability. His operations include the use of greenhouses and tunnels, which protect crops from harsh weather conditions and pests, while ensuring a consistent supply of vegetables throughout the year.
“My main goal is to use innovative agricultural methods, such as smart greenhouses and tunnels,” he said, adding that he produces his own seedlings and prioritises organic farming practices where possible to maintain soil health and improve produce quality.
Dlamini also uses fertigation, a method of applying fertiliser through irrigation systems, which allows nutrients to be delivered directly to plant roots more efficiently. This approach helps him increase yields while reducing waste and production costs.
A key boost to his business came when Dlamini received funding from the MTN SEDCO Cijange Ngebhizinisi, where he got an Award on 2025. This is a business entrepreneurship development programme run through a partnership between MTN Eswatini and the Small Enterprises Development Company (SEDCO). The support has helped strengthen his farming operations and expand production capacity.
Beyond farming, he contributes to his community by creating temporary job opportunities and supplying fresh, healthy vegetables to local markets. However, he noted that limited access to additional funding, grants, technology, and agricultural training continues to hinder many emerging farmers in Eswatini.
“I advertise on social media, and most of my customers come from there,” he said, highlighting how digital platforms have expanded his market reach.
Committed to sustainable agriculture, Dlamini minimises the use of chemicals on his farm in response to growing consumer demand for safer food products.
“Start with what you have. Don’t wait for opportunities go out and look for them,” he advised other young people.
